Sunset on the Beach
event (SOTB) on Sept. 19, 2019
- celebrating the 10th anniversary of the"Hawaii Five-0" reboot and
the season 2 premiere of "Magnum P.I."

Like last year, I represented the website www.serienjunkies.de in the press row at the SOTB event. And similar to last year, I didn't get many interviews because there were too many actors from both shows. Actually, we were told right before the red carpet arrivals started that anyone in the press line after the interviewers of CBS, Hawaii News Now and the Honolulu Star Advertiser would have to do group interviews, as there would be too many actors and too little time to do individual interviews with everyone. I did get to talk to Hawaii Five-0's Dennis Chun who attended the event with his partner Laura Mellow and with young actress Cidni Romias who plays his granddaughter Akela on the show. Luckily, I also got to talk to the newest cast addition Katrina Law who seems to fit in perfectly. Shawn Mokuahi-Garnett wouldn't give me any Season 10 intel on his character Cousin Flippa but, at least, he was fun to talk to. The same is true for Magnum P.I.'s Stephen Hill who is such a nice and fun guy. I was happy to also see him again a week later at the Aloha Festival's floral parade, where he represented Magnum P.I. together with Amy Hill. Last but not least, I also got to talk to Christopher Thornton who plays Shammy on Magnum P.I.
Let me start by saying that I was well-prepared for the SOTB premiere with a bunch of good questions and two fully charged cell phones and my small digital camera. Since I had had to buy a new cheap cell phone after losing my older, good one at the airport in Dallas on the way to Hawaii (I'm so grateful that a wonderful fan brought the lost phone with her to Hawaii, so I got it right in time for the SOTB premiere, too), I decided to record the first few interviews with recurring actors on the new cheap cell phone (not a good idea because the video quality of these clips is not very good) and the interviews with the main actors on the older, good phone on which I did record videos with Alex and Jay, as well as a long video with the stage program (Concert by Train, cast introduction, speeches by Ian Anthony Dale and Stephen Hill etc.).
While I did, indeed, record several videos with various cast members as I kept the camera rolling even when the actors talked to the other interviewers, I didn't get to talk to most of the actors myself since they kept walking back and forth on the red carpet and were repeatedly pulled away in some other direction or turned around and went over to the fans just before I would have had a chance to talk to them. This comment by our editor-in-chief about the first video I forwarded to him, sums up perfectly what it was like on the red carpet: "What a chaos!". As far as working at the press line and trying to get interviews with the actors for the Serienjunkies and for the fans is concerned, the event was quite frustrating again, to be honest - not least because I had some good questions I didn't get to ask while other reporters even confused Kimee with Meaghan, falsely declared that Meaghan was part of the Magnum P.I. cast or simply asked the same boring, old questions like "What's your favorite restaurant?". The Serienjunkies editor-in-chief, as well as myself, are not happy with the material I got at the SOTB. It makes me even more happy and grateful to Dennis Chun who took the time for a long, good interview with me a few days after the event. He's the kindest friend one could hope for.
Of course, I also got to enjoy the great season premiere episodes of H50 and Magnum P.I. on the big screen - which was definitely the highlight of the night. And at lunch time when "the boss" Peter and his little team of producers, as well as Dennis Chun, were at Queen's Beach to greet the fans and to hand out swag like they do every year, I managed to get one of those blue H50 water-bottles that I had been hoping for since Peter had posted a photo of a bottle a couple of weeks earlier.
My own videos and interviews from the red carpet /
press line:
Sorry for the partly bad video/audio quality but the videos are definitely
better than nothing! Please ignore my voice and me talking to myself
whenever one of the actors turned away or was pulled away right before I
would have had a chance to talk to them. It happened repeatedly and didn't
exactly make me happy, as you can probably tell :-)
